Admission to our courses is very competitive so it is important to follow the entry criteria and requirements clearly during the application process. Places on our courses are limited so you should submit your application as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Applications may close earlier if all places on a course are filled prior to the published deadlines.

Application deadlines for our MSc and Diploma programmes are as follows:

Our courses are designed as full-time programmes, with teaching being delivered throughout the week, so are not available on a part-time basis. Previous students who have been working at the time of application have arranged a year-long sabbatical from their jobs in order to take the course.

  • MSc Economics and International Financial Economics
  • MSc Behavioural and Economic Science (Economics Track)

2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent specialising mainly in economics. You must have, or expect to obtain, a degree specialising mainly in economics of first or upper second class honours standard from a British university or the equivalent from an overseas university. This means you should have achieved a good standard in undergraduate courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics/economic statistics at an intermediate level.

We also expect a good standard achieved in mathematics taken at undergraduate level.

Whilst formal techniques are taught as part of the MSc course, prior training in these areas is expected.

A full transcript should be included with the application.

  • Diploma plus MSc Economics

You must have, or expect to obtain an upper second class honours degree with a strong background in Mathematics and Statistics. This means you should have achieved a good standard in quantitative modules as part of your undergraduate degree, or have at least an A grade at A level Mathematics (or equivalent).

  • MSc Economics and Data Science
2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent specialising mainly in economics. You should have achieved a good standard in undergraduate courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics, with a 1st (or equivalent) in econometrics/economic statistics. We also expect a good standard achieved in mathematics taken at undergraduate level.
Mathematics Requirements

MSc students will need to be competent in the following areas of mathematics and the below areas of statistics is essential.

  • Mathematics - Calculus, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, constrained optimization using Lagrange multipliers, matrix algebra and linear equations.
  • Statistics - Probability theory, distribution theory (binomial, normal and associated distributions), sampling theory, statistical inference, interval estimation, hypothesis testing (means and variances), least squares regression.

We run a pre-sessional short course in Mathematics and Statistics two weeks before the start of the MSc course in the autumn term.

English Language Requirements

Students whose first language is not English must provide documentary evidence that they are able to understand and express themselves in written and spoken English sufficiently well.

How to Apply

Applications and Payment

Applications are made online via the Postgraduate Application System and you will need to register an account to apply. The Postgraduate Application Form Help pages here will help you to complete the online application form.

Alongside the submission of your application, you will need to submit your non-refundable application fee of £75. You will need to pay this fee for each course you apply for.

Please note: You do not need to apply for both MSc Economics and MSc Economics and International Financial Economics to 'enhance' your chances of attaining a place. Please note that the entry requirements are the same for both courses; choose one course which you think will suit you best.

Supporting Documents

After sending your application and fee, you will receive an email from the Postgraduate Admissions Team with instructions on uploading your supporting documents. This will include your:

  • Personal Statement
  • Your undergraduate degree transcript, including details of any modules you have yet to complete
  • English language certificate (IELTS) (if applicable)
  • One academic reference
  • GRE General Test score (if available)
Next Steps

Postgraduate Admissions will contact you by email with an offer of a place on the course if your application is successful. You should expect a decision in October (Round 1), late January (Round 2), March (Round 3) and rolling (Round 4). Details of any conditions you must meet will be explained in this email. Some applications may be deferred for a decision in a later round if a place is not offered in the current round.

There are a number of scholarships available for students looking to undertake MSc Economics study with us at the University of Warwick. Below are the scholarships relevant for students looking to study within the Department of Economics.

Economics Excellence Scholarship

The Department of Economics will award one Master’s scholarship (of 100% of tuition fees) to an outstanding applicant who has firmly accepted their offer by 19 May 2025 on one of our one-year taught MSc courses.

The Department of Economics will award one Master’s scholarships (of 100% of tuition fees) to students who are a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by a Commonwealth country and have applied to study MSc Economics and International Financial Economics.
